Press: NuStep and Cooper Clinic Offer Top 10 Tips for Older Adult Fitness

December 21, 2006

ANN ARBOR, MI - NuStep Inc., maker of the NuStep TRS 4000 Recumbent Cross Trainer, recently hosted the renowned Cooper Institute for a certification workshop on fitness programming for older adults. The workshop offered practical advice on older adult fitness, including key considerations, exercises and strategies for active living.

"Older adults pose unique challenges in the realm of fitness," said Steve Sarns, NuStep Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  "For many older adults, range of motion and impact on joints are key considerations."

"80 percent of the population over 65 lives with at least one chronic physical condition, and more than half with two or more," Sarns continued.  "Prescribing a workout recommended for the general population isn't the most safe or effective option for most older adults.  Low impact approaches are much safer and more effective for achieving improved movement and cardiovascular fitness."

Cooper Institute and NuStep's "Top 10 Exercise Tips for Older Adults:"

1. Begin with an assessment of functional and physical fitness by a qualified professional.

2. Extend the warm up and cool down periods of your workout to counter the effects of aging on the body.

3. Avoid relying on heart rate monitors to determine workout intensity.  For older adults, using a rating of perceived exertion (how hard the workout seems) is more accurate.

4. Incorporate all the components of fitness, including strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular wellness, into the exercise routine.  Be sure to include balance training, as this is often neglected.

5. A natural part of aging is a decrease in functional capacity, so try not to get frustrated.  Keep moving and your efforts will be rewarded.

6. Necessary nutrients provide fuel for exercise.  Be sure to maintain proper nutrition to maximize your workout.

7. Attending a gym or community activity center provides a unique social environment that can enhance total well-being.

8. Go to a local sporting goods store to get acquainted with appropriate exercise attire that allows maximum comfort in performance.

9. Aging creates sensitivity to extreme heat or cold, so exercising indoors may be a safer environment for older adults.

10. Create a workout routine that is fun and suits your preferences. Enjoyable workout routines inspire commitment.
